How to get budget from your manager
You probably know the joke:
CFO: “What happens if we invest in developing our people and then they leave us?”
CEO: “What if we don’t and they stay?”
When you talk to your manager or sponsor, see what from these makes the most sense:
- Does the company have values related to learning and growth that you can mention?
- Does your IDP (individual development plan) or coaching relate to the value I could bring?
- The average ROI of coaching is 500%
- The immediate value is for the organization
- Within a short time you will start increasing results and retention:
- Managers and their teams are more focused and effective in their day-to-day and strategic goals
- Undesired attrition costs 6-9 months of salary – when mitigated, it saves time and money
- Employees who get company support in their careers are much more loyal
- An employer that invests in their employees has a stronger employer brand
- Save time and money with effective hiring – have the right people
- Ripple effect – bring new knowledge and practices to the organization
- Learning on the job takes a lot of time and mistakes are costly
- Many companies have education budgets that are not always used
- Expenses on employee training are tax-deductible
- When you tell your manager that you think you can bring more value to the organization with a coach, it’s visible that you’re into value creation
- Can you agree on 50:50 funding, or full reimbursement after they see the impact?
